Our Current Projects Include:

Shanzu Good Hope Children’s Orphanage:
The Shanzu Good Hope Children’s Orphanage takes care of 45+ children between the ages of 5 to 14 years old. With a grant from Sister Cities International, Seattle Mombasa Sister City Association recently remodeled the building, added electricity, upgraded the latrines, built an outside covered kitchen area, and purchased dormitory furniture - bunk beds and desks. The children’s orphanage needs are the following: expand the building, purchase clothing/shoes, and farm animals such as goats, cows, and chickens. We welcome financial donations and volunteers.

Utange Health Care Clinic:
On April 19 2010, SMSCA was awarded a two year African Urban Poverty Alleviation Program (AUPAP) Grant sponsored by Sister Cities International and funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in the amount of $115,000. With these funds, the Utange Health Care Clinic was remodeled and expanded to include a maternity and dental clinic to serve the rural area of Mombasa. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between SMSCA, the Municipal Council of Mombasa, and the Darubini Pwani Local Community Committee to outline the details of the clinic remodeling and management. We welcome medical/dental staff volunteers, donations of medical/dental equipment and supplies.

The Mombasa Sustainable Coconut Oil Making Project:
The Mombasa Sustainable Coconut Oil Making Project helps to alleviate poverty by providing employment for local women in the making, marketing, and selling of coconut oil and coconut related products. This is a joint project between SMSCA, Children's International Health Relief, Palm International NGO, and the Tarumbeta Women’s Group. Funds are needed to build a dryer and a new facility to house the project. To purchase our coconut oil for skin and hair care, please click here.
